Halloween? Why does everyone participate in it? We used to do it until about 7 years ago. Haven't done it since. Too gory and scary for me....I hate how society twists everything. It seems backwards to me to celebrate such a ghoulish holiday surrounded in death and spirits if you're a christian. It just absolutely seems strange to me when people claim it is just a harmless "holiday" in which your kids get candy. If you just want candy, go buy some! Tell me your feelings about this...I am truly stumped. My best friend and my other close friend in town, both very conservative christians, trick or treat. JoAnn, you did it too. Tell me why...And I know how it got started, so I am not looking to find out the history, but simply knowing what it has turned into, why would you do it?
I love you all anyway, so please don't be offended by this, but it's got to be something we truly investigate and think out and not just do because everyone else is doing it.

There's more than one way to do things....I suppose I'm naive, but I too tend to think of Halloween as just a holiday for kids where they get to dress up and run around the neighborhood after dark. I won't let mine wear costumes that have to do with "death and spirits" though.
Lots of churches around here have alternatives to the door-to-door Trick-or-Treating; they throw parties (Harvest Festivals or whatever) and kids can go there in costume and play games and have treats.
I would have preferred to take the kids to a church-affiliated event, but we were doing things last minute because of Paul's and my back problems and we thought we wouldn't be home for Halloween. So we ended up just taking them out briefly for a swing through the neighborhood.
We live in a very safe, kid-oriented neighborhood where most of our neighbors are Christians. And they all allow their kids to trick-or-treat too.
Of course, I do know a few Christians who feel the same way you do....everyone's different.
Example: one of my sisters-in-law, Libby, wouldn't allow her children to watch the Disney film "The Little Mermaid" because the story line had Ariel disobeying her father. I think that's ridiculous, but Libby is absolutely convinced that she shouldn't allow the kids to watch it.
Example: my mother is convinced that the Lord doesn't want her to touch wine. Ever. Not even a single glass. I point out that Jesus's very first miracle was turning water into wine, but she just smiles and says that the Holy Spirit told her not to drink. She has no problem with me drinking the occasional glass of wine because she says it's between me and the Lord.
I think you have to do what you feel is right in your heart. If you feel something is really WRONG, then don't do it. If the Holy Spirit convinces me that celebrating Halloween is evil, I will definitely stop celebrating it.
I hope you're not offended by anything in my reply. :)

Holly, thanks for the link to the crock pot blog! It looks very helpful! Do you know about this one?

She has gluten-free recipes but is also a homeschooling Christian mom. I really like her blog! Thought you might, too....I found her initially through the forum at celiac.com.

We go to a Harvest Festival at church and they have games and candy for the kids. There are no scary costumes and we always do the truck n' treat. You have to decorate your car "harvesty" and the winner of the best car gets a ribbon. Thats what my kids think halloween is. I defintely agree that you have to do what you feel God leading you to do. For us, it is just a fun evening at church with friends and fellowship.
God Bless,
Julie
The Bible says that all things are clean. So we have freedom in Christ to drink wine, or watch rated R movies, or trick or treat. But are we glorifiying God while we do it.
For me, I cannot drink in a healthy way. So I dont drink. The bible says in Prov to save drink for those who are perishing, wine for those with a heavy heart. That means that it's for those who can't do better, in my opinion. God wants our best. That is a book of wisdom. So while we have freedom in christ, is it the best?
What does it teach our children to trick or treat? how are we glorifying god in that?
the church parties are the same.
why not just have a party, when it's not halloween, and let everyone dress up. we do it all the time. my kids love to dress up and invite people over. so we do. but not for halloween.
yes, we are all convicted differently, but are we all reading scripture, seeking God's face and truly questioning WHY we are doing what we are doing.
