progress and homeschooling

Hello saturday... You greeted me this morning with a weigh in of 244. 245 occasionally, depending on which way I stood on the scale. So, either way...i will take it. I had a pop yesterday, a small one, but that's all it took to get that gosh darn craving out of the way. I don't even want one this morning, so it didn't kill me.

I exercised on the treadmill 2 times yesterday, and i can feel the soreness today. That is the hardest part about weight loss and exercise...the soreness that makes you feel like you can't move. I know logically I just need to keep at it, and eventually the soreness will fade, but getting there is difficult.

Went and spent 200.00 on test prep books for my kids today. I have no idea if they are at grade level, and so we are gonna check. This california homeschool law is scaring the crap out of me. I think I am safe because it is written in our constitution that we can homeschool, but who knows which lawmaker is seeking to change it and whether they can. I know the schools are ticked that they dont get funding for the children they dont teach, but they sure as heck get my house tax money. that is bad enough.

off to get them started on their tests....I hope I am pleasantly surprised.

Yes, I always do that too...lean this way or that so that the scale shows the lowest possible weight! LOL!

It's great that you're exercising too...I'm proud of you!

About the California Appellate court decision...the California Homeschool Network (CHN) has this to say on their website:

"Updated March 8, 2008

On February 28th, the court document In Re Rachel L. was published. The actual court document is available to read online. As always, CHN recommends you read the source document itself and be aware that many secondary opinions are also online which may or may not represent the facts accurately.

The law in California has not changed. This is the opinion of one court. CHN strongly believes this opinion is incorrect, and homeschooling by using one of the alternatives to public school currently available under California law remains legal. The implications of this ruling and possible actions are currently being discussed by CHN, along with HSC, CHEA, Family Protection Ministry and HSLDA."

I know that there are LOTS of people who will be fighting this. Paul and I still want to homeschool Emma and Matthew.

What exactly is "homeschooling by using one of the alternatives to public school"? Do you have to be registered with an umbrella school, affiliated with a private school, or are you just allowed to be your own private entity?

That wouldn't affect you anyway would it? Because you are a teacher correct?

What books did you buy, may I ask, I wonder that about my girls even though they are in kindergarten and 1st grade. :-)

What homeschool curriculum do you use?

Holly, look at this article about our "governator":

Governor vows to protect homeschooling

This is encouraging!!

To answer your questions, though, here are the three ways to homeschool under California law:

* by establishing a home-based private school
* by enrolling in a private school independent study program
* by tutoring

You actually have to do paperwork to register as (and maintain your status as) a private school. Teachers at a private school don't have to be credentialed. I think that tutors have to have teaching credentials...? But I'm not sure.

Anyway, even though I teach at a community college, I don't have a teaching credential to teach elementary, junior high, or high school. I could probably get one fairly easily, though. But I won't, because I want to support the other homeschooling parents in their fight to be allowed to teach their children WITHOUT credentials.

They were just spectrum test prep books. They have one for 1/2nd grade, then they have one for each grade after that up to 8th grade, I believe.

Curriculum is a mismash. Abeka, bob jones, stuff from hastings store, alpha omega. You name it...its here.
